FOR THE TECH GALS-- CHECK OUT THE LADY BAG, THE BAG THAT COMMUNICATES!

Ladies, I guarantee you that this is one invention that you'll feel is speaking to you!

Forgetting essential items at home, like your wallet or cell phone, may soon be a thing of the past thanks to six women attending the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University in Canada. These students have developed a purse called the LadyBag that tracks items inside tagged with RFID sensors.

The RFID sensors are small enough to be affixed to anything you don't want to leave behind, which the ladies assume would include your wallet, keys, and cell phone. If one of the pre-determined items is ever missing from the bag, a small icon that represents the missing object lights up on the outside of the purse to alert you before you walk out the door.

Another function of the LadyBag is its ability to display the user's emotional state based on the physical interaction the user has with the bag. The bag has sensors throughout, so if the user wants to show the world she's happy, she can hug the sides of the bag to produce a smiling emoticon, or fiddle with the zipper to show a nervous emoticon.

The fun LadyBag was created by young women for young women in mind, so it's perfect for those who wish to express themselves or just need a little help keeping track of their gear. I doubt it will be in stores anytime soon since this bag is still in prototype form, but the ladies are working on making this available to all some day.

WILL "CARRIE BRADSHAW" BEGIN RENTING HER DESIGNER BAGS?

I am really in awe of how fast the designer handbag rental business has taken off. Bag renting has become the solution for women who might not otherwise have the experience of being able to afford to wear all of their favorite designer handbags. After paying a reasonable monthly fee, women have access to handbags that celebrities and the "well to do" strut around with.

In the soon-to-be released "Sex and The City: The Movie", Carrie's assistant, played by Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, will make mention of the fact that she borrows her handbags from Bag, Borrow, Or Steal, a very successful handbag rental business.

I'm just wondering if Carrie or any of the other ladies in the movie will adopt this alternative way of accentuating their wardrobes. Somehow, the thought of Carrie Bradshaw "borrowing" handbags seems so opposite the character she portrays: innovative, fashion forward, and confident. She has a great social life, fabulous job, great friends, sexy companions-- all the things that most single (and not single!) women long for. Where does the "borrowed bag" fit in?

Well, I guess everything comes down to economics. I suppose that even in tough economic times, it wouldn't be unrealistic for even Carrie Bradshaw to watch her spending and rent handbags!

In real life, Bag, Borrow or Steal and New Line Productions have teamed together, and the handbag company is currently running a promotion alongside the launch of the movie.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS FENDI BAG?

Whoa-- there's way too much going on with this Fendi bag, in my opinion! This leather bag is beaded and accented with metal fringe, and for about $3,000, can be all yours! I love Fendi, but this bag is not working for me!

RECYCLED MAGAZINES PUT TO GOOD USE-- CHECK OUT THIS HANDBAG!

What a beauty of a handbag-- and can you believe it's made from recycled magazines?

Susan Mango, a Texas based wholesale supplier of sandals and handbags, recycles Bali magazines and tourism brochures, transforming them into stylish handbags. The publications are sorted by color, cut into strips, laminated and finally, woven into the newly introduced handbags. Available in 5 color options, these one of a kind handbags have a suggested retail range of $74.99 - $79.99.

The Balinese excel in handcrafting products for export, many of which are woven. This process comes naturally to them, providing employment while also helping to keep their sacred island green!

Susan Mango supplies hundreds of boutiques with unique, hand crafted sandals and handbags. The designer, Susan Connett, spends several months each year in Bali working on new designs and overseeing production. She also volunteers while she is there and contributes to educational programs. The entire Susan Mango line may be viewed at www.susanmango.com.

LICENSE PLATES RECYCLED INTO HANDBAGS?

Who would have thought that a license plate could be recycled and used as the exterior of a purse? These handbags are so cool!

Ava DeMarco and her husband Rob Brandegee one day looked at used license plates and saw handbags. The couple had launched their company, Littlearth Productions, in 1993 with a mission to match style with eco-consciousness.

At first, license plates were used as ornaments on recycled rubber bags. Then they became the bags themselves, twisted into colorful cylindrical purses. Now Littlearth’s recycled license plate handbags can be found in more than 1,000 retail outlets and in the clutches of everyone from Oprah to Chelsea Clinton. “Everything we make is one of a kind, because all license plates are unique,” says DeMarco. In one year, Littlearth recycled more than 15 tons of rubber and 40,000 license plates.

Eco fashion, especially in the world of bags, purses and carriers, has proven to be an inventive outlet for all kinds of recycled materials. And yes, most of these bags—even those made from such unlikely materials as candy wrappers (by Ecoist) or carpets (CarpetBags)—not only look good, but would probably draw looks of admiration from fellow bag aficionados.

SEASONED DESIGNERS NOT FEELING THE "CELEB" DESIGNERS AT FALL 2008 L.A. FASHION WEEK

Just as L.A. Fashion Week took a step forward, the celeb-as-designer trend seems to have sent it two steps back.

Though the presence of bigger and more legitimate designers has grown over the past few years, fashion regulars Sue Wong, Kevan Hall and Ed Hardy are not showing Fall 2008 collections at Culver City's Smashbox photo studios this week.

So as Fashion Week got under way Sunday, the spotlight turned to the likes of "The Hills" star
Lauren Conrad, Nicky Hilton and the Pussycat Dolls.

Yes, the Pussycat Dolls.

Hey, it's just Hollywood, right?

Wong, for one, calls the emerging trend "absolutely bogus."

VERA WANG IS ANYTHING BUT SIMPLE: SHE JUST INKED A NEW HANDBAG DEAL

It looks like Vera Wang won't stop at designing wedding gowns, clothing, and bedding-- everything this woman touches turns into gold. I guess that's good reason why she would now want to take on the handbag market!

According to my source (
PRNewswire), Vera Wang has entered a three-year licensing agreement with Accessory Network Group LLC ("ANG") for the design, manufacture and distribution of contemporary handbags and small leather goods for the Vera Wang Lavender Label Collection.

Retail pricing of the collection will range from $300 to $1,000, and distribution will follow that of Lavender Label apparel, including top-tier department and specialty stores.

The Vera Wang Lavender Label handbag collection will have a feel and tone similar to the Lavender Label apparel collection; whimsical, fun, youthful and flirty.

Since its launch in 2005, the label has succeeded in delivering a line of clothing that focuses on modern, feminine pieces with a retro edge.
